Charity

Each October, Mr. Mittan conducts an annual Hurricane Lilies for Hurricane Relief sale of red lycoris radiata bulbs, popularly known as hurricane lilies, to benefit the American Red Cross.

The annual Hurricane Lilies for Hurricane Relief sale has generated over $6000 in donations for the American Red Cross in the past 2 years.

The annual Daylilies for Doggies sale of hemerocallis (daylilies) generated over $4000 for the Leon County Humane Society over the past 2 years.

The 2011 Florida Wildlife Federation Benefit Daylily Sale sale will be held on December 2, 2011.

During the summer of 2011, Mr. Mittan donated hundreds of plants to Trinity United Medthodist Church for a plant sale to help fund a health clinic in Guatemala.

Other plant sales are held throughout the year with proceeds going to charities such as Wildlife Warriors, founded by Steve and Terri Irwin of Australia Zoo, where Mr. Mittan also sponsors a wombat.

Hundreds of yellow Louisiana iris were donated to Tallahassee's Parks and Recreation Department and free plants are also donated to government and other non-profit agencies upon request.

Other extra plants that are not being used in the gardens are given away to charities when available.
